Independence Day Mozambique 2018

Mozambique annually celebrates Independence Day on June 25.

This holiday celebrates the day, when Mozambique gained its independence from Portugal in 1975.

The first Europeans set foot on the territory of Mozambique in 1498, when the Portuguese sailors from the voyage of Vasco Da Gama arrived to the country.

The Portuguese trading posts started to appear in about 1500, displacing the Arabic commercial and military hegemony.

After World War II the colonies of Portugal were not granted independence and they were declared to be oversees territory.

The Mozambican War of Independence, lasted from 1964 to 1974.

Mozambique gained independence when Portugal's Estado Novo regime and was replaced by the National Salvation Junta.

This event changed political views in Portugal enabling the end of the war in Mozambique.

Finally gaining independence on June 25, 1975.
